Q: What foods and exercises are good to help lose weight in my thighs and belly?

I am fourteen years old. I have a wacky thyroid and i take Levothyroxin. I also take a birth control to boost up my estrogen. I have cysts in my ovaries. To make all my problems worse im overweight. I weigh 190 - 200 pounds. I have a dietician but she isnt that skinny herself so im not sure to trust her.A few years ago i weighed about 80 - 100 pounds. I want to work to be, not that skinny, but at least 130 pounds. Is that a good goal? I also would like to know how to stick with eating and exercises healthy. Sometimes i barely eat and i gain weight. And sometimes i exercise SO much i eat till im satisfied. I hate my body. Everytime im at school it seems everybody sees FAT not ME. Does low self esteem also affect loseing weight? Im just so over being the big person in the group of all my skinny friends. I cry almost every night because i dont wanna be unhealthy anymore. Can anybody give me advice??

Hello Hiocherryo,

My first word of advice is - breathe.  Absolutely low self-esteem will make achieving any goals more difficult.  Depression tends to warp our perception, this I know from personal experience.  I recommend that you talk to someone you trust regarding your feelings, your weight, overall health, and desire to make changes.  Consider a parent, aunt, teacher, school counselor, your dietician, friend's mom even.  Just some possibilities of people to talk to.

Since I don't know how tall you are or what your body percentage is, it is impossible to know what a good goal would be for you personally.  To calculate some of these pertinent numbers, go to the Getting Started page.  However, this information is geared for adult bodies.  I honestly do not know if anything differs for younger teens.

As far as significant weightloss, I can tell you that even a loss of 5-10% will make a difference.  Wanting to jump right to 130 lbs from 200 lbs is too difficult of an initial goal.

Try this: start journaling what you eat and what physical activities you engage in.  Nothing fancy, just begin writing things down.  Your dietician can help you with ideas here.  Be sure to measure your body: height, weight, waist, hips, neck, upper arm, widest point on a thigh, widest point on a calf, etc.

When you have dropped 5% (or 10 lbs), give yourself a huge pat on the back.  When you drop 10% (or 20 lbs), remeasure yourself and see how things may have changed.  Be sure to eat ENOUGH food and drink plenty of water so that your body has enough energy to function.

This most you should probably think about losing is no more than 40 pounds.  That would be a 20% weight loss from your starting point and this will make a HUGE difference in how you feel physically.  But since you have other medical conditions which might complicate things for you, you MUST talk to your doctor about ALL of this.

I'll say that again.  You must talk to your doctor and your dietician.

As far as foods or exercises which might be good for thighs or belly...if you like swimming, try that.  It is the only thing which has ever toned up my thighs and abdomen while helping to make them feel slimmer.  Again, talk to your doctor please.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

To whom it may concern:

I've been struggling with weight since I was a kid, I am happy to say that I have kept 50 lbs. for several years now. But I'm still having a hard time losing more. My suggestion to you is to eat lean proteins lots of fruit and veggies and consuming complex carbohydrates, and of course lots of water and exercising 3 or more days a week.

i dont have a dead good answer but ive done healthy eating in cooking and in other lessons so i know abit about it,i dont know what them things are at the begining, but im nearly 14, so i know how you feel because all my friends are skinny and some of them say there fat,so i must be huge to them, everyone says im crazy to think im fat but i think im just abit over average, but my cooking teacher told be exercise atleast 5hours aweek, and NEVER skip any meals otherwise your body thinks that your trying to stavre yourself and after that what ever you eat goes in to fat,so dont skip meals and dont eat more calories than what you need, try your hardest to eat your 5 a day try to eat more veg than fruit some one told me and if you have 5 apples thats one of your 5 aday you need 5 different fuit or veg, and exercise can be fun, like my friends have started asking me to go to the gym with them,so thats fun and i go to zumba thats like 1hour of dancing one of the best excersises is swimming because your using most of your musels i hope ive helpt abit.
