I am awakened daily by extreme cramps in my feet, or thigh muscles (backside). During the day, I get horrible cramps in my hands and can't straighten out my fingers. My doctor ran a blood test for potassium, and I was just told everything is OK. I have had this problem for at least 30 years, but after having my thyroid removed, it's only gotten worse. Quinine was a miracle drug that I used as needed, but now it's not available in the U.S.
Does anyone know what causes these cramps? Or where I can buy Quinine?
Besides low potassium levels, is there another cause? Thanks.

I want to say up front that I am not a doctor, I am a personal trainer who works with individuals with these types of conditions everyday. I am not diagnosing you, I am simply sharing information with you about similar experiences that I have run into and common causes.
This is a tough one. but there are some alternatives to try that have helped clients in the gym everyday to reduce and eliminate these cramps and pain without drugs. The challenge is that I can not assess your condition and speak specifically to remedy you. I can only point you in a direction that will likely help.
First and foremost I will tell you that it is very, very likely that your muscles are too tight in some areas, and too lose in others and you are likely losing blood flow to them which means you are likely not getting sufficient nutrients and oxygen to them which can cause cramping and pain. This describes that pain that you feel, but does not necesarily address the entire problem. My guess is that this condition causes a great deal of stress for you. Unfortunately too much stress leads to serious unrecognizable conditions on your internal organs and your adrenal gland.
I would suggest two courses of action to reduce your stress and likely reduce your overall pain. First set aside time in your day where you can be by yourself and focus on your breathing. In fact in with your condition I would encourage you to seek the help of someone who can teach you proper breathing techniques.
Second I would research the nutritionist in your area to find one who has expertise helping people understand foods that cause stress on the body and teaches people about the foods their body needs to feel satisified and provide them with the proper amounts of Macronutrients their body needs to function effectively.
I hope this helps!
