The Institute of Medicine recommends a five-pronged approach to curtailing the obesity numbers in the US:

1. Make physical activity a natural part of everyday life.
2. Improve access to healthy food and beverages.
3. Make healthy food more appealing to both children and adults. 
4. Expand the role of health care providers in obesity prevention.
5. Make schools a focal point for obesity prevention.
