FDA May Approve Obesity Drug Qnexa, With Some Concerns

Documents released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggest that the obesity drug Qnexa will be approved, but there are some concerns about side effects. The review found that the drug did meet standards for approval--including a 5 percent reduction in body weight for study participants--but the documents suggest that the FDA has concerns over the drug's heart, cardiovascular, and cognitive side effects. Experts say that if the drug is approved it will only be available to patients with a BMI of 30 or more, unless they have co-morbid conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
