OOOPs....I didn't finish

By Jacquie Friday, June 29, 2007

Hey, it's Jacquie again. I complained about leg pains and hiking....and taking Arimidex. What I left out was.. I've developed osteoarthritis from this medication...and I am at my wits end. I love to hike...but the pain is so great when I go down hill that it does me in for the next couple of days. Any suggestions..other than don't go down hill?

Hi Jacquie, I had osteoarthritis in my hips for 16 years, until I was finally correctly diagnosed. I also had great troble walking downhill to begin with. I tried a stick,  now there are these poles for nordic walking, which might help. Crutches, of course, but when you have to use those, you will probably have quite severe osteoarthritis and may not be able to go hiking at all. But as far as walking poles, and also more traditional canes, they come in telescopic varieties too, which may come in handy.

I know about the hardships of osteoarthritis all the way to being almost a cripple. I was lucky enough to get hip replacements, the first in may this year and the second in september. I also wrote a book about how I coped with this very difficult time, both psychologically and physically. It is called "Hips Attached" and is available through lulu.com

Keep your spirits up and try everything you can think of, so as to be able to keep doing all you want to do! Best wishes

Madeleine
