Just got injected in both knees today. I have bone on bone arthritis. My rt. knee feels a bit better already. My lt. knee is killing me. I hope that this subsides in the 3 days as mentioned in the blog.

Hi,

I am a physical therapist.  Arthritis is an inflammatory condition.  Injections like cortisone are designed to reduce inflammation.  I would say that if the injection is helpful in reducing the pain, that is only part of the potential treatment.  I would also recomend physical therapy to help restore normal range of motion and knee strength.  If the knee is not moving correctly than abnormal force will recreate the inflammation and your pain will come back.  And, our muscles act as shock absorbers so if your muscles are weak extra stress will be passed on to the joint, again causing more inflammation.

Hope this helps.  Good luck.

Thanks for your comment. I have "bone on bone" arthritis in my knees, and spurs on the lt. one. My legs are quite strong. I walk daily, and have a very physically intesive job. My knee doc. is suggesting replacement, but I am not ready for that yet. I am happy to say that my knees feel pretty good this morning. Just a couple of weird twinges that I had never felt before. Yesterday, I looked and walked like the tin man!

I have bone on bone knee arthritis.  Had fluid drained from the left knee and a cortisone injection yesterday. I didn't expect to feel so good so fast.  Got out of bed this morning and no pain that knee.  Terrific!!

Joint injections using either corticosteroids or viscosupplementation are very effective for the treatment of pain associated with OA of the knee. However, this procedure should be done along with other conservative treatment (weight loss, phsicial therapy, etc.) to have the best opportunity to improve mobility and maintain function.

Healthcare providers offering these procedures should practice these skills often as proper placement and technique is important for optimum success for their patients.

Is activity or rest reccomended after a cortisone injection in knee for OA?

1/22/11 1:17am

I was told 24 hours of rest and icing the area every few hours for 15 min.  I had a cortisone shot in my knee today and will be resting tomorrow!  Hope u get to feeling better soon.

I am 62. Have had knee pain off and on for years. Very little arthritis. About two weeks ago my knees became very painfull, swollen, and feel warm to the touch. I am having an MRI this week but the pain is to the point I can barely walk and need help rising from a chair and keerp me awake at night. Doc gave me pain meds which haven't helped. Anyone experienced anything like this?

7/13/11 1:44am

I was told I have OA  in April.  The doc gave me coritosne injections in both knees.  They were both  very painful injections,  but it was great. I could walk, sit, bend, and lift my legs... but it only lasted for about 2 months.  Since then, my knees are in terrible pain.  I cannot sit for long periods, stairs are very difficult, getting up off a chair or the toilet is horrifically painful. Driving long distances is hard, too.  When I'm active I'm fine.  It's when I am resting the pain increases.  Since I have high liver enzymes, I can't take tons of medication, but I've been taking Advil 2x/day, however that only provides minimal comfort.  My doc suggested only the shots, but said I can only get them 3 times a year and knee replacement in 20 years, once I'm 65.

In the meantime, I suffer with pain, daily.  I am only 44.  I am on WeightWatcher and read losing weight helps, but  I was thinking about physical therapy or seeing a chiropractor. Would cymbalta or an antidepressant help?  I'm in so much pain and don't want to have more painful shots which only work 8 weeks. I can't take alot of advil because of my liver enzymes being high....I don't know what to do!  Thanks for any suggestions....I really am at a loss and become very sad about what this is doing to my daily life.  My daily life is affected and I really don't know what to do or where to go.

Thanks for any suggestions!
