Since the publication of this article, there has been a lot more information become available in relation to resurfacing as an alternative to hip replacement. Though there has been negative press in relation to the Du Puy device, there are extremely positive outcomes for other devices such as the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing. I would suggest doing your own research before committing to a total hip replacement and consider this bone conserving alternative.
A skilled surgeon will assess each person as an individual and determine whether it is suitable for you. Some exclusions listed (such as children of child-bearing age) are not necessarily a reason for exclusion.
Like all surgical procedures, the skill and experience of the surgeon will affect the surgical outcomes. Don't rule out a resurfacing without speaking with a surgeon that actually has a lot of experience to determine whether this bone conserving option is the most suitable for you.
I have two shiny BMHR's (I wasn't suitable for a resurfacing, though this is an option before going to a total hip that is still bone conserving) and my personal opinion would always be for resurfacing by an experienced surgeon as a first choice.
