Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at 05:51 AMIt's really too bad that this medication was discontinued for human. It seems to be used by veterinarians now (mostly for horses) Ohhh...to be a horse and pain-free again. I did take this medication at one time until it was discontinued for use , and I suffered no side effects. I was totally pain free. In fact, during that time, I carried three babies to term and raised them through school. Now, unfortunately, nothing stops the pain.My love for my family keeps me going. I thank God for them every day. Keep the FAITH. Something else will be discovered to replace this drug.
Sincerely,Hazel.

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at 01:04 PMWhen a new doctor found out my Dad had been taking large doses of Butazoladine prescribed in 1948 by Mayo Clinic for arthritis for 25 year, he said, "They don't even give horses that much!" His long time family doc in Tucson never questioned the drug dosage nor read up on it. My Dad died from cirrhosis of the liver caused by the drug. Yes, it gave him much relief for 20 years but he paid the price.

No, Butazolidin is no longer used in the U.S. for humans.
Butazolidin was one of the first NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs), the class of drugs that include Celebrex, Bextra, Advil and Aleve.
Today, it's generic, called phenylbutazone, is mostly used by veterinarians.
