Q: is surgery needed for a large bakers cyst?

CoolI have a very large baker's cyst.3.2 x1.6 cm transaxially, covering a 9 cm length. Am mri study did not show any definite meniscal tear. I have grade II to III chondromalacia patella involving the medial articular facet. The study also showed that there is a focal defect in the articular cartilage of the central aspect at the medial femoral condyle and there is global thinning of the articular cartilage at the medial tibial plateau. I have a lot of pain behind my knee and there's also quite a bit of pain below my knee...sometimes on the kneecap itself. My pain does involve the inner knee..to the right of the knee cap. The surgeon felt allmost certain that I had torn my meniscus. He gave a shot of cortisone in the knee which lasted about 6 weeks. But 2 days again, I had severe knee pain and I couldn't get off my knee soon enough! What types of therapy should I get? I have been taking advill on a regular basis for the pain ....it does help some. I have been exercising 4-5x week walking fast and some jogging to keep my 25 lb. weight loss off. My increased walking activity has occured over the last 9 months. I am a 57 yo woman who is quite athletic and have strong leg muscles Thank you soooo much for your medical answers. I love having this question/ answer opportunity. My email is mommamorris3@me.com Susan Morris
