Q: My daughter is 55 has pain in her hip when rising from sitting . Walking is not painful. She has had knee problems her knee came out of position, inherited flat feet Does she need hip replacement?

The feeling she describes is grinding (bone on bone). If it needs hip replacement will her knees hinder a good result. What can you recommend?

Hello, Jo,

I am 57 and I have knee OA, hip displasia w/torn hip cartilage and possibly RA.  I strongly suggest your daughter see an orthodpedic surgeion who can order xrays, MRI's, etc to determine exactly what is going on. I have something called iliotibial band syndrome.  It is very painful, but it is not a "bone on bone" hip issue. It does make it difficult for me to get up and move after sitting for a while. There are al ot of things that can wrong in hips and knees.  Seeing an orthopedic doctor for treatment is your best option.

Best Wishes,

V
