ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES - CROHNS - CHRONIC KIDNEY FAILURE
Dear Dr Cooper,
I have osteoarthritis and was taking anti-inflammatories until I got Crohns and then chronic kidney failure. I therefore cannot take anti-inflammatories now.
What can I take to relieve the pain?
Many thanks,
Regards,
Jonley
Dear Jonley,
First, let me say that I am sorry to hear of your kidney failure and Crohn's disease. I could not begin to offer you personal medical advice without knowing your complete medical history and symptoms, and then doing a full physical examination.
It is important for people with pain to realize that there are many different types of pain medications. Many patients who are unable to take NSAIDs are able to take acetaminophen or other stronger painkillers such as tramadol or various narcotic medications (such as oxycodone or Vicodin). Talk to your doctor about all the potential benefits, risks, and side effects before starting any new drug.
Also, please remember that medication therapy is only one aspect of pain management for patients with osteoarthritis. For many people, appropriate exercise and nutrition can also offer substantial relief. There are also other medical interventions such as various injection procedures. There are also surgical options. If one intervention is not effective, be sure to let your doctor know so that the two of you can talk about other treatment strategies.
Jonley, I hope this information is helpful for you and I hope you feel better soon.
