Q: Does Celebrex Work Better Than Advil?

Sometimes I do prefer to prescribe Celebrex to those with known stomach/gastric irritation that occurs with traditional anti-inflammory medications like ibuprofen (advil). I would not necessarily say that Celebrex works better, but I would say that it is safer for daily long-term use than ibuprofen.

 

One caveat... not all anti-inflammatories are alike and for some individuals one medication meant to control inflammation might work better than another. Thus, trying different anti-inflammatory medications is rational because one might work better for you. Additionally, rotating (switching from one to another) anti-inflammatory medications is rational because one may stop working after a while.

 

If your doctor thinks that it is safe for you to use anti-inflammatory medications, try both (one for two weeks and then the other for two weeks) and see what works best for you. Everyone is different.
