Q: What weight and other exercises are best for OA knees?

I am a 71 year old male with knee OA.  I have a Unicondular(sp) insert in my left knee and my navy OA Doctor has recommended a complete knee replacement in my right knee.  I want to try strengthening exercises on my knee first and want to know the best excercises to perform and those to avoid. 

I find OA debilitating and strongly affecting my quality of life, so I'm looking for anything.  I already take supplements(glucosemine and chronoiden), tylenol for arthritis, fish oil and eat very healthy so my weight is close to recommeded.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,

 

I am a physical therapist.  First, I would recommend that if you want a good exercise program that specifically addresses your situation, consider seeing a PT.  In addition, the exercises will vary based on what equipment you have available to you.  For a general exercise program you can visit this site:

I would also highly recommend using ice (no heat!) to minimize any pain and swelling.  Apply ice to your knee, 10 minutes at a time a few times a day.

I also have OA in both knees and, like you, found it affecting my life negatively. Aside from taking large doses of fish oil (miraculous stuff!) for the inflammation and resulting pain it causes, a physical therapist showed me several leg exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee. I have performed these exercises religiously 3-4 times a week for years now. Leg raises with the foot positioned different ways, step ups, with and without ankle weights. Physical therapy is an effective, natural means of helping the body heal itself and it works, works, works! It won’t fix the problem overnight, but given time it most definitely will. Do ask your doctor to recommend a PT who she/he works with. And do the exercises at home if you’re told to!! Best of luck to you. By the way, such a good idea to try something (anything!) before surgery.
