Sunday, June 29, 2008 Gary asks

Q: I have cervical spodilosis that responded to Meclomen. Why is it no longer available?

Twenty years ago, I foud that tilting my head backwards sent pain down my right arm. The inital attack and several recurrences over the years responded well to treatment with Meclomen.  When I had my latest attack 18 months ago, I found that it was no longer on the market.  I had a c5-c6 fusion to relieve an acute bout that left me unable to raise my head.   Eighteen months post op, I am having recurring symptoms.  A CT scan shows stenosis  of the nerve tracks on both sides greater on the right.  Celebrex relieved my symptoms, but I am not able to tolerate the gastric side effects.  Motrin gives me some reief, but I am looking for something better that will not rot my guts.

Hi Gary,

Thank you for your question. I found some information indicating that several manufacturers have stopped making Meclomen, but there are still a few that are producing it. You may have been told that it was no longer available because the particular pharmacy that you are using is unable to get the medication, but I would recommend trying other pharmacies in the area to see if they are able to order it for you. According to this website, as of April 2007, there are three companies manufacturing the generic form of Meclomen (Watson, Sandoz, and Mylan). You should be aware, however, that there are many, many precautions and warnings associated with this medication, so be sure to discuss the risks and benefits of using this with your doctor. I hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Casey
