Glucosamine/Chondroitin gastrointestinal side effects

Caribear

My mother suffers from mild osteoarthritis in her fingers.  She has tried using Glucosamine and Chondroitin but complains of mild gastrointestinal discomfort.  From the research I've done, indications are that this side effect is usually temporary.  Is there a medication she can take to counter these effects.

You are right, some side effects of glucoasmine include upset stomach, drowsiness, headache and possibly abdominal pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, flatulence (gas), constipation, heartburn, and diarrhea.

There are several medications that treat any one of those side effects. Ask you mother's doctor about taking another medication to counter the mild gastrointestinal discomfort. This is important because any medication we may suggest could have interactions with other drugs your mother is taking. You'll need to talk to the doctor to figure out if she needs medication for these side effects and, if she does, which would be safe for her to take.
