I currently run 3 times a week, approx 7-10 km's each time and I have just been diagnosed with early stages of osteoarthritis of the hip.  I would still like to keep running - Is this ok?  I am fine whilst I am running but I get very stiff afterwards.  I also walk two mornings a week.

You may need to exchange running for other activities that are easier on your hips, but maintaining the same level of activity is possible and actually recommended to keep your bones and joints healthy. Physical activity promotes bone mineralization and muscle strengthening can protect a weakened joint.

In general you should avoid activities that cause hip pain, even if the pain or stiffness occurs after the activity. Running may jar the hip joint, but walking is usually fine. Other recommended exercises include swimming, running on an elliptical trainer, or riding a stationary bike.

You may consider seeing a physical therapist to learn stretching and flexibility exercises that can relieve joint stiffness and increase mobility.

Hi Julie,

How I empathize with you. I was a runner until two years ago, when my Orthopedist told me to stop, upon pain of further injury. He told me the only exercise I should be doing is that recommended by a PT, plus swimming and bicycling. I can only walk half a mile without pain. If stem cell therapies don't come soon, a joint replacement is in my future, courtesy of Kaiser, which I dread. There are outstanding surgeons who can get people back to running, tennis, hiking and tennis.

I made the mistake of continuing to run on a hip that was causing problems, so now I am more or less completely disabled. Not to scare you, but follow the orders of as good a doctor as you can find.

The breakdown of cartilage in the knee can lead to bony protrusions called spurs and considerable joint pain.
