People who suffer from osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee are often sent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to diagnose their condition. But new research suggests that weight-bearing X-rays are better able to diagnose knee OA. MRI scans are being used in excess, experts say, and this is causing a burden to insurers and Medicare. Researchers say the X-rays are a better diagnostic tool for this condition, and they cost significantly less than MRI scans as well.
