Daily ibuprofen may boost heart risks

U.S. researchers are reporting that the popular over-the-counter painkiller ibuprofen may raise the risk of heart attacks and other fatal and serious problems when elderly people take it daily for arthritis. Investigators tested a wide variety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and found that only ibuprofen and Vioxx--which has been pulled off the market--raised the risk of serious heart disease in this age group. The study also suggested that naproxen had the lowest risk of heart-related problems in elderly patients among drugs in this class.
