Researchers discover how OA destroys cartilage
University of Rochester Medical Center researchers say they've discovered the first direct proof of how osteoarthritis (OA) destroys cartilage. Previous studies suggested that OA was linked to higher levels of signaling protein called beta-catenin, but there was no evidence to confirm that link. Now, in a new study, scientists found that mice that were genetically engineered to have high levels of beta-catenin lost most of the protective layer of cartilage that covers the ends of bones within the joints. The researchers say this discovery could lead to new treatments for the almost 21 million Americans who suffer from OA.
