(HealthDay News) -- Pain relievers that reduce swelling and discomfort are effective treatments for osteoarthritis, but certain lifestyle changes can also help alleviate symptoms.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine offers these suggestions:

  • Exercises -- especially water activities such as swimming -- can help maintain joint mobility.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight, and losing weight if you are overweight, will relieve stress on the joints.
  • Physical therapy can help with muscle and joint pain.
  • Wearing splints or braces as recommended by your doctor can help support weakened joints.
