Extreme dryness of mouth, eyes, skin

By Maxine Thursday, January 10, 2008

Is dryness of the mouth etc. another Forteo side effect?  Also dry brittle fingernails that break off at the fingertips?  I have been on Forteo now for 9 months.

Hi Maxine,

Although dry mouth and brittle fingernails aren't listed as specific side effects of Forteo, other side effects may occur, as with any drug. For example, many medications -- prescription and over-the-counter -- can produce dry mouth as a side effect.

If these things continue to bother you, talk with your doctor.

Best of luck,

Maria

I'm sorry to hear about these unpleasant experiences -- I'd never heard of these symptoms specifically associated with Forteo, but medications have the potential to affect people in various ways. I hope your physician can help you find the right solution or perhaps rule out other things that could be causing the effects.

I have had others tell me it is not a side effect but I have always had LONG painted nails and they break off so short now they hurt.  Splitting as well, so I really do think it is the Forteo Blush.  I am anxious to see if I have any improvement when my year is up.

I am getting both those symptoms, now that you mention it. Weak, soft nails that break off and sticky, dry mouth, especially at night/when I wake in the morning. I've been on Forteo for 15/16 months.

I am under Forteo for 8 months now. The dryness all over my body is very uncomfotable. Tomorrow I have an appointment with my eyes Doctor and, at the end of the month, with the doctor who prescribes it. I am also having a reaction in my skeen. I can not use any collar or braceletes because the itching and redness  are hurting me too much.

I would like to learn if somebody is experiencing the same sympthoms.

Hi Bewitched

It's a couple of years now since I was on the Forteo, but I certainly do not remember such a skin reaction.  My understanding is that when any drug causes a strong skin reaction you ought to check with your prescribing doctor immediately.

Dry skin problems are often the result of hypothyroidism.  Maybe when you are seeing your regular doctor you could ask for a thyroid check?

Curiously--I had nail problems on the Forteo, but I just spent the winter in a cold climate and found my nails became very weak and damaged again.  So I've no idea what the real cause is.

Good luck with your treatment.

Thank you, Mary.

Well, I take Levothiroxine for many years now.

I have to check with the doctor what is cousing all this problems.

yesterday I went  to the eye Doctor and he said that my eyes are exctremely dry. I need to put eye drops ( moisturizer drops) every two hours. What your experience has been after the Forteo? Are your bones in a better condition now thatn before.

Hi Bewitched

Maybe you need a higher dose of the thyroid supplement now?

I was in a clinical trial of the drug, and they did nuclear scintigraphy testing several times to get a pictures of how my bones were reacting.  In every one, my bones showed a massive shift in the amount of bone activity, but still at the end of 18 months, there was not one iota of difference in my DEXA scans.

No one knew what to make of it.  It's possible that my bone turnover was so strong both ways--bone loss and bone regrowth--that there was net no change. Or possibly because the DEXA test is so crude and can measure only bone density, improvement in bone quality occurred but did not register.

Good luck,

Mari
