Osteoporosis, low Vitamin D & thyroid problems

By meda Thursday, September 13, 2007
I am curious about whether there is a connection between  osteoporosis, low vitamin D levels and a multinodular goiter.  I am 57,  just got the results of my DXA scan and have a spine T score of -2.5.  I also had low vitamin D levels and I'm taking 50,000 units weekly.  My vitamin D levels are now at the low levels of normal.  And while my TSH level is normal I have a multinodular goiter.  I understand that vitamin D affects Calcium absorption and the your thyroid controls a multitude of body processes.  If they are connected, is there some kind of specialist who addresses all of these issues?

Thanks so much for writing and sharing your questions with us. I spoke with a physician about your case who indicated there may possibly be a connection between your conditions, since goiter can be associated with hypothyroidism and hypothyroidism is considered a predisposing factor to osteoporosis. As Maria mentioned, a specialist who might best be able to explore these issues could be an endocrinologist. Best wishes as your continue to take proactive care of your bone health.

Thanks so much for checking into this for me.  I'm seeing my family doctor next week and will ask for a referral to an endocrinologist.  Do they all have a background in osteoporosis or are there any questions I should ask in particular to know if this is the right doctor?

That's great! A board certified endocrinologist would probably be the best person to help you. Good luck!
