Stomach Medications can be Bad for the Bones

By Christina Lasich, MD, Health Pro Tuesday, September 28, 2010

The FDA warnings sometimes go unheeded. But, this one is worth paying attention to: Proton Pump Inhibitors and possibly H2 Blockers might increase your risk for fractures. This new warning is just more proof that many medications should not be taken for an indefinite period of time. And now add stomach medications to this list of medications that have proven hazardous for long-term use, a list that also includes anti-inflammatory medications (NSAID's). Alarmingly, both of these medications are available without a prescription. Without a prescription, you could be jeopardizing the health of your bones or worse. We live in an over-medicated world and our medications are starting to make us sicker.
