We are all looking for the right things to do to help our bones, but sometimes we forget that its simple things that many times do the most good. take care...phyllis
1. Balance...an easy way to prevent broken bones is not to fall. Practice balancing exercises along with your weight bearing and weight training. Let's not forget good posture.
2. Keep active...no matter what we do during the day just moving and doing daily chores is exercise. It's all good.
3. Eat a balanced diet that includes all the right food and a few not so good, that we eat just to be happy. Chocolate does a body good
.
4. Laugh often and heartily, its good for spirit and gives you strong abdominal muscles, which support the back.
5. Take your supplements, but don't stress about forgetting them some days. Stress isn't good for anything.
6. Listen to what you gut tells you, you'll know what's right and whats not for you. Everyone has an agenda to share or sell, some are good, some aren't, we have to decide for ourselves.
7. Don't let our less than perfect bones rule who we are...we are all much more than a dx given by a dr. who doesn't know us.
8. Enjoy everyday the best you can.

Thanks again - I hope you post here again... PJH
Hi Phyllis: Welcome to our community, and thank you so much for sharing your wonderful words of wisdom.
When we're first diagnosed with osteoporosis, some of us tend to go into a tail spin, trying to figure out what to do next, what meds to take, asking ourselves how cautious do we need to be to protect our bones, and in the process lose the innate knowledge we already possess.
All your advice on staying active, practicing balance, doing exercise, eating a good diet--including the occasional no-no--and laughter are the cornerstones of being a healthy happy individual regardless of the challenges we face.
I totally agree on eliminating stress since it's such a non-productive thing that does far more bad than good, and doesn't resolve anything, it's a waste of precious time and energy with horrible side effects.
Keep up the good work and good advice, we all need to be reminded that within us is the key to good health. We may have wonderful Dr.'s, but you're right they don't know us completely and can only provide so much help. The rest of the work and eventually success, is within us in our daily activities, attitude, healthy choices, treatment decisions and a lot of laughter.
Thanks for enlightening us, for those times when we can forget what's really important in life that will lead us to great health and a long wonderful life!
