I have heard that once you lose some bone density that you can not gain it back.  So how does exercise prevent osteoporosis.

Hi Jason,

Unfortunately, once bones have thinned, it is difficult to regain bone density. That is why exercise is a good strategy to prevent osteoporosis and greater bone loss.

Hi Rose,

I am current taking the synthetic estrogen due to a total hysterectomy at 31.  I recently discovered that I fall in the osteopenia category.  Many people are suggesting that my high dose of estrodiol may be promoting bone loss.  Is this the case?

Dear Curious,

I'm not an expert, but I lost my whole reproductive system at age 17 in 1979 and have been on HRT for 30 years and my bone density is ok. There was a time that the docs thought it was bad, but I had a very sophisticated bone density test done and it was normal. Ask to have that test done. Also have your D vitamin level checked. I have to during the winter take rx 50,000 units of D to keep it normal along with calcium. Exercise and lower body weight is also vital, since my diagnosis I went from 225 to 125 and kept it off going on 20 years. Hope this is of help.  Laura
