Researchers in Toronto suggest that lithium has the potential to improve bone fracture healing. It was found that both bone and cartilage formation were enhanced by lithium during the body's process of fracture repair.
Lithium treatment for bone fracture repair is promising, but possibly only in later stages of fracture healing, not before as preventive therapy. The study, conducted on bone fractures in mice, has yet to be tested on fractures in humans.
