Choosing the right treatment option ??

By Marie In Florida Wednesday, November 14, 2007

I am 56 yrs young, and have recently seen a Rheumatologist for another reason, and been advised that I need to take immediate action regarding Osteoporosis.  Have never been treated before except naturopathically through my wellness chiropractor.  Have been sporatically taking a calcium supplement since 2000.  I am just now understanding that my levels are serious.  I had two Bone Density tests one in 2000 and one in 2007 which were just provided to two MDs ( my family phys and specialist) and they were very concerned.  In 2000  my T-score was 3.49 and actual mineral content - 97.7 mg/cc and in 2007 the T-score is 3.63 actual mineral content - 94.3 mg/cc.  My chiropractic strongly advises against any of biophosphonates.  The MDs are therefore recommending Forteo.  Any opinions out there??   What else is there if anything with less potential for  side effects and cost.  I have just discovered your site and am trying to get up to speed quickly to make my decision.  Any advice out there??  Other sites to read etc..??  All input much appreciated.

Thanks so much for sharing your situation with us. Hopefully this site will help provide some ideas to discuss with your physician(s) as you determine the best treatment option in your case. You didn't mention why your chiropractor ruled out bisphosphonates in your case. In general, these medications are often considered the first line of action for osteoporosis, although they should not be taken by those with severe kidney problems. Also, oral bisphosphonates are to be avoided by those with a history of severe heartburn or esophogeal problems, and because of the small risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw, bisphosphonates may not be a good bet if you require ongoing or major dental work. Forteo is an anabolic medication with another set of possible risks, but it can also be very effective in preserving bone density for those at high risk of a fracture. Another alternative for postmenopausal women that you could ask your doctor about would be Evista. Best wishes as you consider this important decision.

my mother, who is 81, has been taking forteo for 2 yrs now.  She suffered from osteoporosis to the extent that her spine collapsed.  In the past year she has fallen more than once (she suffers from severe leg pain, knee replacement etc) unfortunately, but amazingly has not broken a bone.  Her bone density check has moved her up to the level of severe osteopenia but out of the osteoporosis range.  I think it is a good drug.  Remember to take your calcium spread through the day, not all at once.
