Have taken Forteo, wonder what's next?

By Carol Vail Sunday, February 08, 2009

Originally I took Fosamax for 4yrs, had to stop (esophagitis) moved to Actonel for 3 more years.  My doctor advised Forteo, and I completed 22 months of the 24 month regimen when I was diagnosed with Leukemia (AML).  Have finished successful treatment (chemotherapy) and now I have to do something about my low T scores.  I am taking Vitamin D and waiting for a referral to a specialist in 4 months.  Wonder whether I could be taking Boniva or one of the bisphosphonates in the meanwhile, and also would like to know what Reclast therapy is.  I have also had in situ breast cancer so can't take hormone therapy of some types.  Didn't think too much about side effects of Forteo, just was glad there was something to try.  My bones improved, but after 8 months of chemo and being off any medication for so long, I'm pretty much back to very low scores.

Any info on Reclast?  Any data on the use of bisphosphonates following the use of Forteo?

Hi Carol:  Welcome to the community.  Sorry to hear you have AML, but it sounds like you've had success in treating it, I hope so.  You must be a very strong person!

Here's a link on Reclast that may be of help.  The Cleveland Clinic did a study on Reclast treatment after Forteo, but I don't know if the study results are available yet.

If you're also thinking about Boniva, here's a link from Dr Gonter that will explain it as well.

Good luck with the specialist...

Hi Carol:  I found the link to the study I mentioned, and it looks like the final info won't be recorded until May 2009.  You might want to keep an eye on this study to see what the outcomes were for patients recieving Reclast after completing the course of Forteo.

Here's the link to the notice and criteria of the study.  We'll have to wait to get the final results after they are collected by the Cleveland Clinic.

This only provides info for one of your questions, but at least there was a study done on your particular question, about Forteo and Reclast.

Good luck...
