Osteoporosis. Admit it; for you, a young mom, osteoporosis conjures up mental pictures of bent-over old ladies, shuffling along with a cane or walker, right?  It’s true, most Americans see osteoporosis as an “old people’s disease,” like Alzheimer’s or hearing loss. ...

Sometimes too much calcium can do more harm than good.  You really need a good doctor to make sure you are not overdosing on calcium.  A friend was recently diagnosed with hypercalcemia and had to have a parathyroid gland removed to correct the problem.  Before being correctly diagnosed, she was getting treated with calcium and osteoporosis medication.  Luckily, a good alternative doctor did extensive blood testing and found her calcium levels to be dangerously high in her body - not her bones.  The calcium and osteoporosis meds were stopped immediately.  Since the surgery to remove one parathyroid gland, hormone levels are going back to normal and the bones are now absorbing calcium.  She will never have to take the osteoporosis meds again, and will only take low levels of calcium.  The problems with taking Bisphosphonates are just now being discovered.  They are actually causing fractures.  There is still a lot to be learned.

Yes, it's important not to over do any kind of vitamin or other health supplement. Luckily, it's hard to get too much calcium simply from a normal healthy diet, which is what parents should be encouraging with their children. Thanks for your input here - PJH

Dear Hamel,

Thank you for the very illuminating instructions on fighting osteroporosis. But you have not written much about the role of Vitamin D which everyone in the world is talking about these days -- how high doses of Vit D can actually help control and prevent osteoporosis. Please do let us know!

Yours,

Priya
