Orthorexia: Eating “Healthy,” Starving Your Bones

By PJ Hamel, Health Guide Saturday, April 24, 2010
You’ve heard the expression “calories in, calories out,” right? Our bodies need a certain number of calories, provided by what we eat, to function normally. If you burn more calories than you take in, you lose weight. If you burn WAY more calories than you take in – by severel...

Thanks for posting this great article!  There are so many of us that can learn from this.  I have a few friends (in the over 50 age group) who are so overly worried about every single pound gained, wanting to still have the body they had in their 20s and 30s, that they are limiting their diet this way.  I know how easy it could be to get caught up in this way of thinking and I could see myself slipping into this restriction of foods just to be able to wear a size 2 once again....Not only is this just awful for our bodies (and minds), to do this with osteoporosis would be a dreadful choice!

The "eat a little bit of everything" quote at the bottom really is the best way to live.  We don't deprive ourselves of what we love...we just keep it under control.

It all comes down to this...We aren't 25 anymore...We never will be.  Let's just take care of the body we have no matter what age we are and be thankful for every year we grow older!

Lainie, great perspective - and great advice. It's SO hard to let go of that notion that we can "get back" our 25-year-old bodies, if we just try harder, deprive ourselves of more, exercise longer... Let's exercise moderately, eat a little bit of everything, and feel good about where we end up - how's that sound? Smile Thanks so much for sharing here. PJH

Your recent post is excellent.  It really makes you stop and think about your diet.  I can see how you can become orthorexia without realizing it.  Thanks PJ.
