I have a hard time ditching the diet coke. I like to drink beer so I switched to miller lite which is only 3.2 carbs per beer. one rum and diet coke is 0 carbs and 0 calories. you do the math. I am tired of letting go of everything. I have had 2 fractured hips, one of which broke completely in half. The doctors won't diagnose me with osteoporous, but still managed to talke me into getting the reclast shot after which I was on fosomax and started spitting up blood. I now take lots of bone building vitamins on my own. I recently had a root canal, the first in my life to give me excessive pain after and now I'm wondering if it was the reclast. I am really tired of this. I'm 53 years old and feel like I am aging tooooo fast.

Carla, it's very easy to get frustrated and angry when you've got a lot of health issues. It's natural, too - don't put yourself down or feel guilty for being mad! You feel what you feel... Hey, as I said, one Diet Coke a day isn't going to do any harm - it's the steady diet, all day long, that doesn't help your bones. I'm surprised they say you don't have osteoporosis, yet have given you Reclast... strange. Anyway, sounds like you've taken treatment into your own hands - hope it works out for you. And that you start to feel better soon! PJH

What about non caffine diet sodas like Diet Sprite, Fresca, etc.  Do they hurt your bones like the diet caffine sodas do?

3/16/09 4:56pm

They still do hurt your bones, due to the phosphate. Caffeinated sodas are worse, but any sodas (diet or regular) aren't really doing much for you health-wise, bones or anything else. PJH

Have a look at this - http://www.organicconsumers.org/school/cocacola021605.cfm - it should make it easier to avoid these drinks after you've read this.

Here is a link to more information about the genetics of Osteoporosis that was prepared by our genetic counselor and which has links to some useful resource for those dealing with this condition: http://www.accessdna.com/condition/Osteoporosis/282.  There is also a number listed for anyone who wants to speak to a genetic counselor by phone.  I hope it helps.  Thanks, AccessDNA

A claim was made (or implied) that ingestion of phosphoric acid from soft drinks can lead to an increase in calcium excretion of the body. I have been researching this claim and thus far failed to locate any such source which refferences a study ... can you help ? .. There is actually data from a study finding a totally different result .. Still looking for data to substatiate and compare studies ..

The article started out interesting and the truth is that coke and all soft drinks are harmful.

However, milk and sweeteners deserve their own article.

Milk and meat are leaching calcium from bones. Just google it.

Have you ever seen adult cow drink milk? Or milk of different species? It's completely unnatural. Cows (and horses and gorillas) get their strong bones and muscles from vegan diet, mainly grass!

"Growing evidence is showing that calcium in milk does not protect against osteoporosis. For example in a 12-year Harvard study of 78,000 women, those who drank milk three times a day actually broke more bones than women who rarely drank milk. Similarly, a 1994 study in Sydney, Australia, showed that higher dairy product consumption was associated with increased fracture risk: those with the highest dairy consumption had double the risk of hip fracture compared to those with the lowest consumption."

Sweeteners were discovered by accident when looking for new pesticide. They kill insects quickly and people slowly. Just google it. Esp. aspartam.

Good luck. We all learn all the time.

Thanks for your input here. I recently posted about low-acid diets, which touched on protein leaching calcium from bones; and this coming week will post a piece covering just what you say: the dangers of too much calcium. Stay tuned. PJH
