Hi PJ, thanks so much for clearing up this issue about our bodies not being able to absorb more than 500 mgs of calcium per serving.  I hope this will answer a lot of questions our members have on this topic.

My Dr. mentioned to me, that when we take more than 500 mgs at a time we just end up with high priced urine, since the excess that's over 500 mgs, is just excreted into the urine and waisted.

Good Job explaining this!!!

What terriffic ideas - especially the one about the skim milk with Ovaltine.  Breaking the day down like that really makes sense.  Thanks for the great ideas.

You're welcome - I'm hooked on taking my vitamins at night, too. Really seems to work well. Good luck - PJH

I am 56 years old & in good health. I walk about 2 1/2 miles per day.  I just had a bone density scan. (routine).  The doctor discovered that one of my hip bones is getting thinner.  The doctor prescribed 150mg Actonel to be taken monthly.    I'm not crazy about taking Actonel from everything I read.  Bad side effects.  Do you think it would be enough calcium if I followed you're plan?

Hi - Calcium alone won't solve your bone density issue. if the doctor wants you to take Actonel (or any bisphosphonate), it's because dietary or lifestyle changes won't do the trick, and s/he really thinks you need a drug. FYI, I'm 56 years old, taking Actonel, and haven't found the side effects bad at all. In fact, they're lessening as time goes on. I'd suggest you give it a try, before deciding it would be too troublesome to take. Good luck - PJH
