Is Walking Good for Osteoporosis?

Simple question. Well… maybe not.I’m sure we’ve all asked this, at one time or another – hoping the answer would be yes. Because it would be great if walking were good for osteoporosis.Walking is easy. It doesn’t require you to spend any money, or wear special clothes. ...

Hi PJ, thaks for the sharepost, i enjoyed reading it.  For me walking is not only a way to get exercise, but is also  good for the head. I have never started a walk with a problem and came home with it not solved or at least not as pressing.  I call walking "therapy for the body and soul".

There are ways to make a walk more bone jarring...add marching, low kicks, side steps, walking lunges and just have fun going down the road like a kid would do.  Walking backwards where its safe to do so is good too..it uses different muscles and requires a differnt kind of balance.   take care..phyllis

Phyllis, I agree wholeheartedly. I come home from my walks full of ideas (if I can remember them... sigh. Mentalpause!) And I'm definitely taking your advice about walking backwards, doing sidekicks, and acting like a kid. Thanks for sharing your positive energy here - PJH

Good discussion ladies-walking backwards and sideways is a good way to keep you muscles guessing. The only other tidbit I will add is that I have added a weighted vest to my walking routine. It is a safe way to get more out of your workout and is supposed to be good to build density mostly in the hips, but elsewhere as well. Many of the physical therapists who are experts in osteo think they are great and use them in their own workouts too. Shelley

Cool! I have lots of vests - wonder if it would work to put weights in the pockets? I'll have to try that. Thanks---- PJ

I'm doing the weight lifting also, but was also told that walking would increase bone density. The other expert that I talked to concurred that biking and swimming do nothing for bone density (drat, my main forms of exercise.) Is this post that walking doesn't increase bone density based on solid studies. Like to know. Hope I don't have to start jogging or running. I don't know if I even can besides I love my walks.
