Osteopenia at the age or 20 :(

By nailat Tuesday, January 26, 2010

hello all!

I am a female at the age of 20 almost 21 and I recently found out i have osteopenia, I find it quite odd that at such a young age my bones are starting to weaken. What treatments am I to seek at this age ? My mother is postmenauposal and was recently diagnosed by osteporosis.  Could it be heridetary ? I just want to know what is the next step, and how do I know if this will mature into osteoporosis.

Thankyou

Not knowing how this conclusion was reached, I find it odd that at your age you would have a bone density test unless you have a history of "fragile fractures" or have a chronic disease. In any case, remember that we are all built differently. Some people naturally have thin, less dense bones; that does not neccessarily make the bones weak. In the natural world, some of the least dense wood (balsa wood) is the strongest. Your bone density may just be normal for you. Exercise, eat right, and make sure you have enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet. Concentrate on health and you will be fine.

Thankyou for you response :)

You should definitely be checked for celiac disease or gluten intolerance.  These can lead to malabsorption issues, resulting in loss of nutrients such as calcium and Vitamin D, which will result in osteoporosis.

Thank you I will definitely check up on that.
