OSTEOPOROSIS PAIN AND DIFFICULTY WITH MEDICATIONS.

By Suzanne Friday, June 01, 2007

Hello, I have been living with Osteoporosis for many years (I'm 68 years old). Have tried the pills and my stomach just can't handle the pain. Micalcin was helpful but was $50.00 every two weeks and we just can't afford that on our fixed income. My Dr. recently gave me the second infusion of Boniva (I was so hopeful) and the first injection gave me moderate flu symptoms for a few days. The second Boniva infusion has left me in terrible pain (most of the time). You name a body part and it hurts terribly. I'm no wimp and am willing to try anything but this pain was unbearable. Boniva is approx. $68.00 every 3 months which is more in our price range. The Dr. does not think I should continue the Boniva because of the severe reaction but I would like to continue even with the pain if I thought it might ease with each injection. I've had broken ribs several times but nothing else. (Thank goodness.) I have a condition called Hystoplasmosis which has caused lung difficulty and I'm on oxygen most of the time which only complicates things for us. Yes, I guess this is a gripe session - not intended to be. But would like to hear from anyone else who has taken Boniva infusions and their reactions to it. Look forward to hearing from someone.l Thanks, Suzanne

Have you tried Amnitryptoline for your pain? It helps me a little. Do you take anything to help you sleep? The less sleep you get the worse your going to feel the pain. I am just starting the treatments for my Osteo so im a new comer to all this but they have been tring so many drugs with me as well cause i have Acid relux and a heart problem and they have to watch what they give me because of my cancer so. But i thoiught i might throw that medication at you to look into to help you relax ok. Take care Pam

I received my first injection of boniva and have been quite sick since then.  I was anxious to read your comments as I was told by the doctor that any side effects from the injection were impossible.  I have joint pain, fatigue, headaches and stomach discomfort.  I am certain that this really is a result of the boniva.  I also have tried all of the other osteoporosis medications and cannot tolerate them.

I have been told I have Osteoporosis for years, and urged to take the meds.  I had trouble (either Migraine or stomach trouble, I can't remember which) with the oral meds, so I agreed to take the Boniva Infusion.  I have only one 4 days ago, and I have been in unspeakable pain since then.  I am desperate.  I don't know what to do.  I don't know how to get rid of the pain.  Every part of my body hurts, but it seems to come in bunches....shoulders and hips in 1 attack, chest and back in another, and so on.  In addition to the attacks, I have all-over aching all the time.

Now I also have Fibromyalgia so I am accustomed to pain, but this is so much worse!!  And it is not the Fibro, it is different because in addition to muscles it seems like bones, too.

I am so sorry I did this.  I never had any pain from the Osteoporosis nor any breaks, so I wish I had just left it alone.

Does anyone know what I can do to counteract the effects of this Boniva infusion?  I simply can't go on like this.  I really need some relief.  Thank you very much.----Margaret

Hi Suzanne,

Sorry to read about your pain after the second Boniva infusion. I had my first Boniva infusion 3 weeks ago andd luckily didn't have any reaction, I don't think. However my lower back has been aching for about a week, but I thought it was because of all the Christmas box lifting..I I wish I knew. I'm not looking forward to the second infusion if it is going to cause severe pain. Please keep us posted. Best of luck, Linda
