Since Forteo is a replica of a portion of parathyroid hormone, it can only be administered by injection. To make it simple for the patient, the medication comes in a pre-filled pen device that only requires two steps to deliver the proper dose. The needle that fits onto the pen device is the smallest on the market and is the size of an eyelash. Eli Lilly also provides free one-hour classes taught by registered nurse educators on how to use the pen device properly.

Since Forteo is the first and only osteoporosis medication that can stimulate new bone growth, its unique mechanism comes at a premium price. On average, a 28-day supply can cost upwards of $700 per month for a patient paying cash. The account executives at Eli Lilly have done their best to negotiate with insurers to make Forteo readily available but individual co-pays may vary. Patients are advised to look into prescription programs offered by the state in which they live for additional assistance if they qualify.
