Reader Question: I have osteoporosis and have been taking Fosamax for the past 3 years. I was just reading in the paper this morning that this drug was shown to cause bone fractures. Isn't this medication supposed to protect me from this? Should I stop taking it? What about the other similar drugs in...

I am a 54 year old woman who has been very active...waterskiing, swimming, kayaking, biking, snowboarding, etc, etc....I sustained a fracture of my scapula 6 months ago, which has not healed.  I was on fosamax for about 5 years.  My activites are now limited to walking, and there seems to be no hope in sight for this to change, as my body can not seem to heal the fracture.  My doctor has no explanation other than fosamax.  Beware!

There was a lengthy article in the September 15th edition of the Wall Street Journal that stated that "Reports of scary side effects...hundreds of lawsuits allege that the drugs cause a rare condition in which part of the jaw bone dies".

I have been taking Boniva several years after Evista didn't work well.  Even tho it claims this side effect is rare  - how does one determine if this could happen to them while on this type of medication?
