Can Vitamin C Improve My Bone Density? Can I Stop Taking Actonel?

Reader Question: I have osteoporosis. I am taking Actonel, Calcium and Vitamin D. I recently read that taking Vitamin C can help improve my bone density. Is this true? Can I stop my Actonel?   For the past few years there has been some discussion about Vitamin C and its role in bone metabo...

Vitamin C is good for a number of health reasons, I know, but I didn't realize osteoporosis might be one of them. I wouldn't assume I'd be able to substitute it for medication. But I WOULD assume, from the info., that vitamin C may help my bones, and I should certainly add it as a supplement to my morning vitamins—especially as it's practically impossible to take too much vitamin C, right? I've heard your body simply flushes out any excess. Thanks for this information - PJH

This is the BEST news in a long, long time -- I am practically dancing with joy! The news came today on Christmas making it the merriest gift of the season! Linus Pauling, the votary of high doses of Vit C would be the happiest man alive if he knew all his theories about Vit C were going to be proven right, that it is a wonder drug on its own. Unlike Vit D -- which is also a wonder drug, but where fears of side effects and interactions with various organs and calcification of the arteries etc., exist --Vit C happens to be a good clean drug with no serious side effects or interactions!!

I wonder what was the dose of Vit C that was examined in these trials? That would be the question paramount in the minds of all!! Will someone please answer this?

Also will you please give us a link to the Tufts University research?

Thanking you,

Yours,

Priya

Hi Priya, here's a link to the study Dr. Gonter mentioned from Oct, 2008.  It seems to be a summary of the study, but you can read it anyway in case you haven't already.

I am a caucasian, 5'4" femaile 69 1/2 years old and 110 pounds.  December 2010 I fell while line dancing and broke my left radial tip and suffered a non-complicated fracture of my left wrist. I had surgery of the radial tip and asked the doctor if he felt osteoporosis contributed to my breaks.  He indicated to me that these were trauma fractures and not symptiomatic fractures.  He added that for certainty I either had or was at risk for osteoporosis.

I then asked him to prescribe a dexa scan.  The scan showed that I had neither osteopenia or osteoporosis.  My doctor was stunned that my bone density was under 1% less than that of a 30 year old woman.  Get to the gym ladies.  I started weight bearing and cardio exercise 5 years ago.  I go a minimum of 4 days a week and line dance 5 days a week.

This week I received a health email stating that you can increase bone density 1% a year with adequate (consistent) weight bearing exercise.  Exercise rules.  Medication drools.

A new study shows that resveratrol supplementation has the ability to "exhibit bone-protective effects equivalent to those exerted by hormone replacement therapy. [...] It is therefore anticipated to be highly effective in the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis without an increased risk of breast cancer" I take the Resvantage resveratrol supplement as it is the best quality one and the one that most physicians recommend. Access the links below for the scientific facts about how resveratrol can help prevent osteoporosis.
