Reader Question: I have been treating my osteoporosis for the past few years with medications.  Recently I developed intolerance to all oral medications.  I am scared to get IV medications and would like to go on Miacalcin nasal spray.  Is this good enough for me?    Dr. Go...

Hi Dr. Gonter:  Nice informative blog!  I've heard that some people use miacalcin for pain, have you any knowledge of this and if it works?  My mineral metabolism Dr believes so, as do other patients I've talked to, but like anything else everyone has varying reactions to meds and wondered if this is something well known or not.

    Thanks,

I do use this drug in cases of acute vertebral fractures.   However, I am unsure of its value in other areas.  Good luck!

Hi Dr. G:  Thanks for giving me the information I was looking for.  Is it only used for severe vertebral fractures, or can it be used for pain from other spinal problem in conjunction with other osteo meds?

    Thanks again...

If the patient has GERD or similar with oral bph meds why not try a SERM i.e. Evista?  If pt. is osteoporotic then miacalcin will do as much as calcium.
