Hi Pam, thanks for the list of interfereing drugs, its always helpful to know all you can about the things we put in our bodies and how they all work together. I learned on another board (NOF) recently that Vit D3 can also effect your TSH level if you have thyroid disease and take drugs for that. I think we'll be learning a lot more about Vit D as time and more reasearch passes. take care...phyllis
Hi Phyllis, thanks for joining in...Did your TSH go up when you increased your D? I agree with you, we'll hopefully know more about these supplements when further studies are done on them. In the meantime it sure does get confusing about what amounts are best for us and how we should get them. It would be nice if we could get all the researchers on this stuff to agree every once in a while.
Thanks again,
Pam
Dear Pam,
Once again thanks for a wonderful and very informative article on Vit D. As far as the interaction with drugs is concerned, there is considerable confusion about the interaction with Vitamin A -- thus it might get overly absorbed or poorly absorbed with Vit A which is not clear. Please write something about this also. Many people take Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil for Vit D -- but these oils contain Vit A and it shoots up the absorption of Vit D more than is needed? This is the controversy prevailing. Please throw some light on this or in another article where you show the interaction of Vit D with other vitamins like Vit A. Vit C, B12, K, and Magnesium.
They say Magnesium causes low blood pressure -- and Vit D also contributes to low blood pressure -- so the combination might shoot the blood pressure down?
Thanking you in anticipation,
Best wishes and regards,
Priya
Hi Priya, thanks for joining us... We'll have to get into the interaction of vitamin A and D in another post. I'm glad you don't have to take any of these meds, but if you ever find that you do make sure the Dr. is aware of your D intake and adjust accordingly to the med you might be taking.
Thanks again...
Hi Priya, I forgot something that I wanted to ask about your vitamin A. Are you taking vitamin A that is primarily from carotenoids (plant source of beta-carotene) or are you taking A from retinol? I thought that if the A we get is primarily from beta-carotene then it doesn't interfere with D. Do you know if this is correct?
You've probably already read this, but here's a link from the Linus Pauling Institute on A and D in reference to birth defects, osteoporosis and calcium absorption for bones. Look for the paragraph on "Do high intakes of A increase the risk of osteoporosis."
This doesn't answer your question, but it does shed some light on the current RDA, and other issues with high doses of A from retinol.
Dear Pam,
I take a multivitamin + minerals pill daily and it contains Vit A = 5000 IU and D3 = 400IU.
I dont think I know the difference between the Vit A in pills and the Vit A in carrots! I used to think it was the same! Thanks for addressing the issue!
Yours,
Priya
