Mice Test Amgen Bone Loss Vaccine on Space Shuttle Atlantis

By Pam Flores, Health Guide Sunday, July 10, 2011
NASA sends mice into space for a unique study on osteoporosis.   Astronauts lose bone mass while traveling in zero gravity, and a new sclerostin-blocking molecule may help to change the treatment landscape for bone loss.   Sclerostin production increases during prolonged periods of inac...

Dear Pam!

We have to hand it to you to find the most unusual and latest medicines for osteoporosis! This medicine will be great for those on wheelchairs or bedridden for days or those leading an inactive style - like me! lol! Also the injections wont be asbad as those of Forteo. There is little said on the side effects of this drug however-- and I hope these wont be as bad as those of Forteo or the biophosphonates. But as you said it is still in the experimental stage -- so while there is life there is hope!

Congratulations for yet another staggering post!!

Yuors,

Priya

Hi Priya, good to hear from you!  I sure hope that we can find out about the side effects of this new drug as soon as the research is done.  Unfortunately, Amgen (the manufacturer) is not releasing this info yet and I suspect this new venture into space will be used to help get it approved by the FDA if the results are good in the group of mice that were given the shot.

Since bone loss from skeletal disuse is a major problem, we need to find a solution to this since those with medical restrictions and physical limitations, can't get the normal weight bearing exercise they need for their bones.

It's unfortunate that we sometimes forget our friends who are physical limited and they need help with this, so I hope they can find a solution for those who can't do all the exercises most of us can.  We should never take our health for granted.

I'll keep my eyes open for any info on the side effects and results, and when they are available post them back here.

Thanks again for being such a loyal and inteligent reader and member!

Take Care friend...
