Forteo Pen

By kathryna Tuesday, March 03, 2009

I was curious if anyone had noticed any difference since using the pen.  I have only been on Forteo 4 months.  I started waking up in the middle of the night with intense hip pain.  Have no idea if it has anything to do with using the pen, but my Endo said to simply stop using it for 2 weeks to see if there was any difference.  It has been 2 weeks, but I still have the wake-up hip pain.  I was wondering if anyone else had noticed any changes or has had any pain.  Thanks, Kathy

Hi Kathy:  Welcome to the community!!  Sorry you are having this pain while taking forteo.  Joint pain is a listed side effect for forteo, but I would also have your Dr check for anything else that might be going on with your hip.

Have you ever injured your hip or do you have arthritis?  Old/new hip injuries and arthritis can cause pain very similar to this.

I took forteo for 2 years and am now on evista, but I didn't have any pain from it.  Hopefully your pain will go away soon, but I would still look into alternate causes of this pain, just to be on the safe side.

Let us know what you find out and if this subsides.

Good luck...

Hi Kathy:  There was something I forgot to mention, and thought I would add this here.  If the pain doesn't go away while you are off of forteo, a x-ray of your hip would be a good place to start to check for other possible problems.  Of course your Dr. would have to agree to this, but random hip pain can occur for many reasons and it just makes good sense to rule out any other mechanical or degenerative hip problem, which many of use have as we age.  I have hip pain, but it started before forteo and still continues, but I have severe osteoarthritis in many areas of my body.

Again I hope you find a resolution to this real soon!!  Best of luck with this...Smile

Pam

Hi Pam, and thanks for your comment.  At age 57 I do realize the ole pains of getting older, but to date the doctors have not said anything other than having to use the forteo pen as being my main problem.  The onset of pain in my hips was literally quite  drastic and somewhat instant.  I didn't fall or slam into anything so that's why I am a little confused. The only thing that came to mind was the forteo, which may not have anything to do with it.  One doctor wants to do another bone density while the other just wants an Xray.  I will  probably do both.  I will let you know if they do indeed find anything else.  I certainly don't want to blame the pen because I am thrilled they have it, due to so many of us need it.  Thanks again.

I have been on daily Forteo for a year - yes, lots of bone pain - but I just had a bone scan and have increased bone mass -  I think it's worth it. Vicki in San Diego

Thanks so much for letting me know this.  If I am increasing bone mass, I will put up with my hips waking me up.  I am sorry that you too had any pain, but I am glad to know it's not just me.  I am going in for another bone density next week, don't really expect any major changes since I am just going on 6 months, but we will see.  Thanks again Vicki.
