Other Causes/ Osteoporsis

By skp Wednesday, January 30, 2008

I know that Diet and Exercise are important - and Calcium and Vitamin D - etc ...

But I did all of that  - and still ended up with serious Osteoporisis..  ( -4 )..

Recently learned - that I have CELIAC DISEASE ..and one of the Major side effects ...

is Osteoporsis !!!  Please - check with your Doctor about this - if you do not have any

obvious reason to have developed Osteoporsis.....Many Doctors are not real familiar with

Celiac Disease .... it occurs in the small intestine -- so if you have it -- you are not absorbing

the Calcium  - OR - the Fosomax/Boniva / etc that you are taking.. ....I  was treated with various

Prescriptions / Exercises / etc for over 10 years ....and never understood - why it just kept

getting worse....Now I know why !! :)

You are absolutely right -- even though celiac disease has been known for some time to be an osteoporosis risk factor, definitely more needs to be done to spread awareness about the link. Thanks for bringing up this important connection, hopefully it will help others combat bone loss before it becomes severe.
