Dear Friends,
I have been taking large amounts of Vitamin D, 60,000 IU per week, and also about 1200 mg per day of Calicum for osteoporosis! And others too have been taking it with great enthusiasm! Now there is an SOS flashed across on December 3, 2009 that this can be dangerous if there is a mutation of the gene in the blood -- about which no one really knows. The research article says that there is danger of the calcification of the aorta, arteries as well as the brain. Can we afford to take such a big risk?
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY EVERY WORD THAT THE SITE BELOW HAS TO SAY AND THEN GIVE YOUR EXPERT OPINIONS USING ALL YOUR KNOWLEDGE. IT COULD BE LIFE-SAVING FOR PEOPLE ALL OVER THE GLOBE WHO HAVE BEEN DRAWN INTO THE VORTEX OF THIS CONFUSION ON VITAMIN D:
http://genecarehealth.com/?p=114
All the votaries of Vitamin D who talk about large doses are silent at this time! We poor patients are left to find out the answers from our "doctors" who know little or nothing about the latest research because they got their MD degrees years ago, when nothing was known about these startling effects of Vitamin D.
What are we to do -- improve our bones or kill ourselves with high doses of something which could be as lethal as a bullet through the heart? Vitamin D!! I never thought I would be using these words for a Vitamin that I have such great respect for! But this website by reputed medical researchers is terrifying because it is so recent!!
SO PLEASE COME TO THE RESCUE OF PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD WHO ARE DOSING THEMSELVES LIBERALLY WITH VITAMIN D AND TAKING JOY IN IT -- IS IGNORANCE BLISS? BUT UP TO WHAT POINT!
YOURS,
NATHJI

Hi Priya, I read your link and what struck me was "all" the pre-conditions you have to have for this to be a problem. They first mention the gene variant, hypertension, family history of hypertension and heart disease. If you had all of these problems then you might have something to worry about. I also would like to know how you'd find out if you have this particular gene variant and how common it is. Is this something that many have, or is it a rare gene. I do have all three of the other risk factors, but don't know if I have this gene they refer to. It also seems to be somewhat alarmist in nature, and until I hear more about this, I won't worry about it.
There's too many factors that have to be present for this to be of concern. It never said how many people may have this gene and even if you did you'd also have to have the other 3 pre-existing conditions.
I don't know if any of this applies to you, but I wouldn't put too much stock into it until we know more about this gene variant.
Dear Pam,
AS it is you are always there for everybody even when the doctors are silent. Thank you so much, you av erelieved me of such a great burden. Can I now go on taking the Vit D 50,000 Iu per week and 1200 mg calcium? They also say that excess calcium is bad for the arteries and it should not be more than 700 mg or 600 mg -- would you know about this?
As regards the gene factor this will go above the heads of all doctors here! They will probably think I am talking about jean pants! lol.
It would be tragic if just to take Vit D one would have to get one's genes tested first!! I dont have any of the factors listed in the research, but I dont know anything about genes and how they would be tested if at all!! You are right, I had best forget it!
I even wrote to Dr. Veith the original progenitor of the mega dose Vit D theory, Toronto University, but there is no reply thus far. I suppose he would be the one to be worried.
Many thanks again,
Yours,
Priya
