Vit D and Cholesterol levels

By nathji Wednesday, December 23, 2009

Dear Friends and Members,

More and more people are taking high doses of Vitamin D these days for osteoporosis and osteopenia these days.

I wish to state at the outset that I am a pro-Vitamin D believer and am learning more and more about its effects on the health from members here as well as research sites that contradict each other.

I found this information by a lady  so important that I wished to post it as a separate discussion which requires the participation of all members on high doses of Vit D.

The lady in question was taking 2000 IU per day and discovered that her Cholesterol levels went up all round -- the HDL, the LDL, Triglycerides, and total cholesterol. The going up of HDL may be good -- but the going up of LDL and Triglycerides is worrisome.

She further added that her sister had been on 3000 IU of Vit D daily and her sister also developed high levels of Cholesterol.

Some advise that the levels of Vit D be increased as the previous levels were not good enough.

It is recorded in the literature tjhat Vit D helps heart disease. The question is that of cholesterol levels.

These days there are even research sites that show that high cholesterol levels are nothing to be worried about as many people in the world ( including France and Japan) have high cholesterol levels with lesser heart disease than those countries where cholesterol levels are strictly lowered.

I wonder how many people taking mega doses of Vitamin D have developed high cholesterol levels, and what have they done subsequently?

This is so important a question that I would earnestly request all members to join in with their experiences.

With best wishes for your good health,

I remain,

Your friend,
Priya

Hi Priya, thanks for joining us... Are we sure it's the vitamin D causing the elevation?  I take a dose that is close to what you mention and my cholesterol levels are ok.  That said, we all react differently to things so it would be hard to pinpoint the cause and say it's the vitamin D for sure.  Has her diet changed any, is there any heredity factors at play??

I hope your friend finds out what's causing this and rectifies it.  I'm not convinced it's the D but that's just my opinionSmile

Best of luck to your friend...

Dear Pam,

Many thanks for your studied reply. Unfortunately her sister who is taking 3000 IU per day of Vitamin D also had raised levels of LDL Cholesterol. There is another lady on about the same levels of Vit D and she also reported high LDL and is on statins.

On the other side there are three ladies who like yourself have had no raised LDL Values.

That means there are four cases with no ill effects and three with ill effects.

Te literature points overwhelmingly in favour of Vit D being good for the heart -- so obviously it would not be raising LDL which is bad for the heart as we know.

It may be as you said -- that each one reacts differently to Vit D, so I guess we all should get our cholesterol levels checked as and when we take the supplement. I suppose this is the finding we get from this.

Thanking you,

Yours,
priya
