  • Boy, the rules are getting stricter all the time. We know we need plenty of calcium and Vitamin D for healthy bones. But not long ago a study came out and showed that calcium supplements weren't as good as getting the calcium straight from foods like dairy products -- making it harder to feel confident that just popping the supplement pill is enough. Now the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reports that research showed that a number of people who spent considerable amounts of time outdoors (averaging 20-plus hours per week without sunscreen) still had low Vitamin D levels. So I guess for this nutrient, taking the supplement may be necessary for some of us. How confusing! Here's a brief summary of the study:
