I was skeptical of a recent article describing how stress has caused increased rates of osteoporosis in men, but this study suggests it can happen -- in either gender . This research, in which participants were mostly women, http://www.annals.org/cgi/content/summary/147/8/541,
found that a number of people with osteopororis had high levels of cortisol, a hormone sometimes produced in times of stress. Although researchers can't yet prove the high cortisol levels caused the osteoporosis, it will be interesting to see more work on this potentially fascinating connection.
