I was concerned to learn that individuals who survive gastric cancer are especially at risk for osteoporosis. According to research published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, those who overcome this deadly cancer often go on to battle lower back pain, and one doctor in Korea found that over a third of gastric cancer patients had osteoporosis. While certain types of chemotherapy has been linked to osteoporosis in patients with other types of cancer (breast cancer for example), the particular concern for those with stomach cancer is that gastrectomy may affect absorption of calcium and other nutrients.
