Once-a-Year Osteoporosis Medicine

The big buzz today is about a study in the New England Journal of Medicine touting the effectiveness of a drug taken intravenously just once a year to help prevent fractures from osteoporosis. The Novartis medication, zoledronate and sold as Zometa and Reclast, is already available in the US to treat Paget's disease. Serious side effects appear to be limited to arterial fibrillation in 1 in 100 patients. This is my favorite article on the subject, since it actually tells about the experience of one woman who participated in the study:
