depression = osteoporosis?

By Lila de Tantillo, Health Guide Thursday, May 31, 2007

The Harvard Women's Health Watch reports increased fractures in older people taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for depression. It's not clear, however, whether these antidepressant medications contribute to osteoporosis or it's something about the depression itself. (However, the study ruled out that the link is solely from people becoming depressed after a fracture -- the findings held true for women who didn't even know they had osteoporosis.) The Harvard publication is a paid service but you can read more about this at http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=72531
